dubrovnik, croatia

When we first decided we wanted to make the move abroad, we said that no matter the timing, we would take two weeks to travel in advance of moving in. Greece was super high on our to-do list, so we decided we would hit Athens, Santorini and Mykonos. Then we broke out the map to see what else we could check off our list while in that region. We settled on Dubrovnik, although we didn’t know much about Croatia. We didn’t know many people who had been there, but we did know that it gets attention for being a beautiful country right on the coast of the Adriatic Sea, so we thought we’d give it a shot. We are glad we did!

Dubrovnik is most popular for its Old Town, which is where we spent a lot of our time. It is also the setting for King’s Landing, for all the Game of Thrones fans out there. We spent two full days in Dubrovnik. On day one, we took a three hour Game of Thrones walking tour, where a tour guide walked us around the old city with a book full of screen shots from the show so that we could see exactly where the scenes were filmed. It was cool! (We are fans of the show).

We walked along the tops of the city walls, which come full circle around the whole area and offer some nice views. We also stopped at Buza Bar, which is a bar tucked into a cliff with great views of the sea!

The city also has a cable car that you can ride up to the top of a mountain and get some views of the city and down the coast.

At night, we headed back to the old city for dinner, and then found some live music in the square.

On day two, we spent the morning walking in Lapad, which is a peninsula on the opposite side of Dubrovnik with beautiful beaches and scenery.

In the afternoon, we took a ferry to Lokrum, which is an island just off the coast of Dubrovnik (about a 15 minute ferry). No cars or hotels are allowed there, so it is just for day trips and is more peaceful than the busy city. There are peacocks roaming all over! While on Lokrum, Steve went for a swim in the Dead Sea, which is a small natural salt lake/pond. The coast line leading out to the sea is rocky, but beautiful, so we walked around and hung out there for a while. You could jump into the sea if you wanted, but the water was still pretty cold in early June, so we just dipped our feet in. There is also a fort at the highest point on the island that we hiked up to for some great views!

Then, back to old town for dinner, wine and more live music in the square!

Overall, we loved Dubrovnik. 2 days was the perfect amount of time for us to spend there. Here are a few more pictures!
