The second stop on our trip was Athens. We had an evening plus one full day here – which was a great amount of time to see the highlights of the city. We arrived to Athens from Dubrovnik in the late afternoon. We showered up and went to a rooftop bar for some cocktails and a view of the Acropolis from afar. The view was so cool!
The next day, we woke up and headed straight to the Acropolis. The cruise ship crowds roll in mid to late morning, so we wanted to beat the rush, as well as the heat. We were there for about an hour. The Parthenon had some scaffolding (I think it is just constantly under repair), but it was still so cool! The temple of Athena Nike is also located here.
Afterward, we walked over to the temple of Olympian Zeus, and also checked out the site of the first modern Olympic Games.
The remainder of the afternoon was spent wandering the neighborhoods, roaming through souvenir shops and stopping for greek beer. We also had our first batch of gyros and they did not disappoint! In fact, we were impressed by all of the food we had here – moussaka, souvlaki, dolmades and more – all so yummy.
At night, I was insistent on getting a good view of the Acropolis after sunset, so we camped out at a rooftop bar and it was so beautiful!
We had heard that we should only plan to spend one day in Athens, and we heard right. We are happy we went there – the Acropolis is definitely worth a visit. But I would be lying if I said I wasn’t itching to get to the next stop once our tour of the Acropolis was over – Santorini was next!
