madrid, spain

I celebrated my 30th birthday this past weekend, which wasn’t exactly a number I was looking forward to. But, coupled with a trip to Madrid, Spain, it was an exciting celebration that I’ll remember forever! Unlike a lot of the other cities we’ve visited, there weren’t many “to-do’s”; we went solely for the food, the drinks, and the culture, and we were not disappointed…

Happy birthday to me!

We ate so many delicious meals in our <48 hours in Madrid, including seafood paella, endless tapas, and churros dipped in chocolate (the breakfast of champions). We also went to a local place where they cure their meats in-house and make fresh sandwiches – we grabbed a spot at the counter, ordered beers and chorizo / iberico ham sandwiches, and ate standing up next to all the locals. Delicioso! It was a good thing Steve is able to speak Spanish, because English wasn’t an option at this local gem!

Although most of our waking hours were dedicated to eating and drinking, we did find some time to experience the local culture. On our first night we went to a flamenco show, which was an hour long and included dancing / singing performances by some unbelievably talented performers. It seemed really authentic and we loved it!

We also did our usual walks around the city to explore the architecture and check out the views. We saw Plaza Mayor, the Royal Palace, and more! Here are the pictures:
